Match Report

OKA League Matches, 3rd December

The 1st and 2nd teams played their final OKA matches before Christmas, and got two wins!

The 1st team kicked off against Basingstoke, knowing that although the opposition were bottom of the league, there was no room for complacency. As expected, Basingstoke fielded four experienced boys, but only two of their girls had played before the club was set up in early 2006. We took control of the match early on, and although we didn't always convert our attacks into goals, strong defence contained their more experienced players well so that even the longer Basingstoke attacks often came to nothing, and we scored a steady stream of goals ourselves to win 15-3. I can remember the details of the last few goals, which included Caz scoring from a side-feed, me getting a penalty after Tony was fouled, and James with a long-shot.

The 2nd team then saw off Oxford City 3 8-6 in a very very tight game where neither team ever led by more than one goal until the last few minutes of the match. We were 1-0 down for a long time in the first half, until Carla earned a penalty which was converted by Tony. We then conceded and equalised twice more, before finally taking the lead, but were pegged back to 4-4 at half-time. 15 minutes of play later and halfway through the second half, the score was still 4-4 after lots of deadlock!!! At this point, Caz came on and scored a long-shot almost straight away, but City equalised once again. We then earned a penalty in the last 10 minutes, but City called a time-out, a psychological ploy which gave Mark a couple of minutes to think about the penalty before having to take it! This did not put Mark off, as he sunk the penalty to give us the lead again. However, City equalised with a long-shot, leaving us to search for the winner once more. It was the Sloan Ranger to the rescue, James then speeding through for a running-in shot with less than 5 minutes remaining, and a minute later, Paul (on for the injured Tony) sunk a long-shot to secure the win.
